Play Therapy is based in the premise that play is the natural and intrinsic way a child explores and expresses their inner world. Play therapy offers an opportunity for children to explore interpersonal relationships and their various needs within this, to play out and explore feelings and problems, to explore self-expression and problem solving within a conceptual-expressive and child centered environment.
Play Therapy is a non directive approach which draws on toys, sand tray, art, role play and various expressive materials to allow young people to express themselves in ways most suited to them. By sorting out issues and concerns through their play, making sense of different emotions and ideas, and seeing themselves through the therapeutic relationship, they are empowered to navigate their world in reality.
For children who have experienced trauma or had their world ‘shaken’ and are in need to build resilience, a feeling of control, a more positive and accepting self-concept and a greater sense of self trust.
